Origins. This scripture describes the first Buddhist council. It was held shortly after the Buddha's death, and collected the set of rules (Vinaya) and five sets of Dhamma.

Tradition holds that little was added to the Canon after this. Scholars are more skeptical, but differ in their degrees of skepticism.

The earliest Buddhist texts were passed down orally in Middle Indo-Aryan languages called Prakrits, including Gāndhārī language, the early Magadhan language and Pali through the use of repetition, communal recitation and mnemonic devices. Doctrinal elaborations were preserved in Abhidharma works and later Karikas (verse expositions).

As Buddhism spread geographically, these texts were translated. The more comprehensive work of Chanakya, the Arthashastra is itself composed in many parts, in sutra style, with the first Sutra of the ancient book acknowledging that it is a compilation of Artha-knowledge from previous scholars.
